Judy Hartman, 76 of Salem passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at United Hospital Center. She was born July 24, 1943 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Following the death of her mother she was raised by her aunt and grandparents. Communism ruled Czechoslovakia at the time and the deprivation and lack of personal freedom was especially repugnant to young Judy. She met and married Vinnie Hartman and they were able to escape and come to the United States. They settled in New York City, got good jobs and became citizens. They reveled in their new freedom and helped other political dissidents to get to the United States. Judy’s appreciation of America never faltered. Eventually Vinnie became ill and needing a slower pace of life, they bought land in Doddridge County. They farmed and Judy graduated from Salem College and joined the Salem Baptist Church. While living in New York City, someone knocked on her door and presented her with a Bible. Religion had been forbidden as she grew up and that Bible was her introduction to Christianity. She studied it and a relationship with Jesus Christ developed. She always admired and desired knowledge in addition to the Bible, she read as much history, science and biography that she could. Judy’s other passion was nature and everyone who knew her well realized that she always struggled to feed and protect birds and animals as well as her beloved pets. She will be remembered for her generosity and love and willingness to help anyone she could. Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Vaclav “Vinnie” Hartman on April 26, 2009. A graveside service will be held at K of P Cemetery on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Roger Fontaine and Pastor David Carpenter officiating.
