Obituary

 CDR Kermit Grover Hines, Jr., 86, of New Milton, WV, passed Sunday May 26, 2019 at his residence with his family by his side. 

Kermit was born to the late Kermit Grover Hines, Sr. and Anna Bessie Squires Hines, September 25, 1932, in Weston, WV.  He graduated from Weston High School in 1950 where he participated in track, band, and Boys State. Kermit received a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education from the Fairmont State College in 1957. He received a Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education from West Virginia University in 1970. He married Helen D. Plauger in 1959, and they lived together in New Milton, WV. Together they raised 5 children.

He leaves as his legacy 5 children: Nancy Siders (Larry), Salem, Kermit Hines (Lisa), Seaford, DE, Michelle Gregori (Stephen), Hurlock, MD, Paul Hines (Theresa), Cambridge, MD, Christopher Hines (Sarah), Bim, WV.  He also leaves to cherish his memory eighteen grandchildren Heather Cox (Kendrick), Annamarie Short, Oliver Frazier (Stephanie), Amber Siders, Erin Holiday, Krista Morrow (Clarence), Jenny Simmons (Suprel), Kaleb Hines (fiancé Brittney), Kaitlynn Gregori (fiancé Billy), Nicholas Gregori, Austin Hines (Haven), Danielle Bayes (Brandon), Andrew Hines (fiancé Sarah), Sophia Hines, Lexi Vickers, Luke Vickers, Chloe Vickers, Emma Vickers,  fifteen great-grandchildren Nerual McCandless, Quinn Cox, Kiah Short, Eva Short, Aleah Short, Ella Frazier, Sutavia Simmons, Suprel Simmons, Mekhi Simmons, Kasen Hines, Kayci Hines, Kaden Hines, Easton Bayes, Laelynn Hines, Sadie Hines, and 1 sibling Annabelle Squires. Along with several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by Kermit Grover Hines, Sr., (father), and Anna Bessie Squires Hines, (mother).

Kermit joined the United States Navy in 1950. He attended officer candidate school in 1958. While in the Navy he and Helen lived in Virginia, Florida, and Rhode Island. Kermit was active in the Navy Reserves from 1969 to 1979. He retired from the Navy in 1979 with the rank of Commander. He began his education career in Doddridge County in 1970 at Greenwood Elementary.  He was a travelling principal from 1972 to 1973, Sedalia Elementary and Centerpoint Elementary, and from Smithburg Elementary to Carr Elementary 1973 to 1974. From 1974 to 1976 he was a teacher and principal at Smithburg Elementary. From 1976 to 1989 he was a high school Inustrial Arts, Mechanical Drawing, and History teacher at Doddridge County High School. During his time at the high school he served as a class advisor and a Youth for Christ Advisor. He was a substitute teacher from 1989 to 1995, before finally retiring in 1995.  

Kermit was a member of Locust Grove Church in New Milton, WV until it’s closing in. He then transferred membership to Blandville United Methodist Church in Blandville, WV where he was a trustee.  He was a Lay Leader and delegate to the West Virginia United Methodist Charge Conference. He was a member of the Ritchie/ Doddridge Gideons International. He volunteered as a 4-H Leader for 35 years, during which time he earned his All-Star Pin (the highest award in 4-H), taught shooting sports and wood crafting classes during camp. He was a treasurer for the 4-H Leaders Association for many years.  He was a member of the American Legion Honor Guard Post 0025. He also served on the Doddridge County Republican Executive Committee.

Family will receive friends at Greathouse Funeral Home, 1999 W. Main Street, Salem, on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 2-8pm; Funeral Service will be held at Greathouse Funeral Home on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 12:00 noon with Reverend Bill Davis presiding. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens where Full Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.  A Reception will follow at the Doddridge County Library at 4:00pm.  Online condolences may be sent to GreathouseFuneralHomeWV.com.  Greathouse Funeral Home is honored to assist the Hines family.
